Oops, she did it again – new post from guest blogger Miss Copenhagen. Makes you want to dive into her pictures – and go there yourself.
Warhol, Lichtenstein, Eames, Rauschenberg and Panton upstairs and Tara Donovan downstairs. This spring you can be in mighty fine company at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, north of Copenhagen, with the current Pop Art Design and Tara Donovan exhibitions.
I’ve always loved Louisiana for a number of reasons: The international modern art collections and exhibitions, with a strong tradition of attracting pop art, the location and building itself and not least the beautiful costal drive to get there from Copenhagen, which takes you past two Arne Jacobsen 1930’s classics; the Bella Vista apartments and the Texaco petrol station on Strandvejen.
Pop is one of the world’s most influential movements and the exhibition Pop Art Design focuses on the dialogue between art and design, which was most intense after World War 2, when America dominated the world of culture and the emergence of mass media.
This spring Louisiana Museum of Modern Art presents 180 works by international icons in art and design from 1955 – 1972. Artists such as Warhol, Rauschenberg, Oldenburg, Hamilton and Lichtenstein and designers such as Eames, Panton, Castiglioni, Nelson and Sottsass are all represented in the current Pop Art Design exhibition.
I visited Louisiana this Easter break with the sole purpose of seeing Pop Art Design…
… but was somehow drawn to another exhibition downstairs. And I’m so glad I went down those stairs, because down there artist Tara Donovan exhibited some of the most unbelievable works of art I’ve ever seen.
She creates large-scale works of art of cheap everyday materials like straws, buttons, silver foil, tooth picks and paper plates with nothing but gravity holding them together. You can experience and entire wall of straws, which you have to get very close to in order to see what they are. It’s incredible and a must see if you visit Louisiana.
You can catch the Pop Art Design exhibition until 9 June 2013 and Tara Donovan until 20 May 2013.
