To get this job you need to improve your Danish. This is more or less what Swedish speaking, just-moved-to-Copenhagen Emma here was told at a recent Copenhagen job interview. Emma would love to get the job.

So what can we do to help her; to make her learn to speak Danish on an everyday conversation level – fast, as in A.S.A.P.?

THE STORY

Quickly translated to English: I went to a job interview today, regarding a position I really, really want. Everything looked fine IN SPITE OF they think my Danish sucks… or that I understand Danish that well. I need to understand Danish, otherwise I’m not considered to the job :-( SO my question for you, with a million contacts in Copenhagen (well, Emma, maybe half a million (O;), if you happen to know someone who’ll teach me Danish? The kind of everyday conversation… so I can understand what people say. Or do you have any other advice? Grateful for any tip! Have bought a Danish book, and will watch Danish tv series. Not knowing so many people in Copenhagen yet makes it difficult for me, to find situations where I have to speak a lot of Danish.

Big hugs and thanks again for the nail clinique tip! :-)

My way of learning Danish was to get out there at the crowded Copenhagen cafes, and listen to all the smalltalk. Remember almost having a headache every day the first three months, so hard to concentrate on understanding what people were saying. And especially in groups, many people talking and laughing at the same time, cracking jokes… felt so much outside the group for a while. But after some time the Danish sun was rising :=)

Thank you, guys, for sharing and helping Emma out!

Peace & Love,
a-g

Ps.We fell in love with Copenhagen so much that it was tears
